10 Travel-inspiring books

Personally, I love to read, especially if it is connected with my hobbies (travel, photography, dance/yoga, culinary adventures, tiny dwellings, and quality hammock time). I love how quickly the time passes when you’re racing across the pages in search of more information. Or when you look up with that “Aha!” moment. Or when a book surprises you based on your premature judgment of its cover/title/summary.

If you’re like me and could always use a few reading suggestions when traveling or to inspire your next travel adventure, then read on:

For those who love slow travel

The Great Railway Bazaar by Paul Theroux

Imagine what it would be like to travel in 1973 by train all the way from London, through Europe, the Middle East, South East Asia, and back in a matter of four months. Train travel never seemed so captivating and entertaining.

For those who love learning about others

Bangkok Babylon by Jerry Hopkins

There is no need to sit around Bangkok bars to strike up conversations with strangers because Jerry Hopkins does it for you with 25 at times shocking, fascinating, and definitely unforgettable characters and their stories in the land of smiles.

Books that suck you in for hours on a long journey

Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Ponder spirituality and survival as you read through the pages of this fantasy adventure. Taking a boat or visiting a zoo won’t ever feel the same after this book.

Lost on Planet China: One Man’s Attempt to Understand the World’s Most Mystifying Nation by J. Maarten Troost

Observe another travel writer’s comical and cringe-worthy adventure through China – a destination on your Bucket List or maybe Never-in-a-million-years List after this page-turner.

For the Bucket list makers

The Rough Guide to Ultimate Adventures 1 (Rough Guide Travel Guides) by Greg Witt

From soft experiences to adrenaline-fused moments, you’ll feel inspired and driven to take on a new adventure in the new year. Hard hat, life vest, and bug spray are not included!

For the road-tripper

National Geographic Drives of a Lifetime: 500 of the World’s Most Spectacular Trips by National Geographic

Inspire yourself with 400 detailed and beautifully illustrated road trips with when to go information, maps, and standout sights. Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!

For the ladies

Pink Boots and a Machete by Mireya Mayor

Talk about transformation (or a journey)…from NFL cheerleader to respected primatologist and National Geographic Explorer, Mireya Mayor is a bad-ass chick you’d want to read about.

For the foodies

A Cook’s Tour: Global Adventures in Extreme Cuisines by Anthony Bourdain

Salivating, like one of Pavlov’s canines, I devoured this book during one of my travels, imagining how great it must feel to have the knowledge and the experiences of a traveling chef.

For the “Postcard photograph” seeker

National Geographic Simply Beautiful Photographs (National Geographic Collectors Series) by Annie Griffiths

What do babies and photographers have in common?

They enjoy looking at beautiful things. No degree in art necessary to take a glorious visual journey through the pages of this arresting book. I dare you to not say “WOW!” at least once.

For the American history buff

The Launch of AMERICAN GETAWAY: 100 years of saints & sinners at Camp Wandawega by Austin Sailsbury

While browsing the envy-infusing accommodations of Airbnb, I came across “Summer Camp for Adults” – Camp Wandawega in Wisconsin. A little more digging into the retro-inspired decor of their cabins and facilities, I came across the thrilling history of the place (all 90 years of it) condensed into a 100-page book. The promise of a true story of bootleggers, ghosts, the Feds, Russian gangsters, and more – was enough to pique my curiosity and to purchase this book.
