DJAC’s fall exhibition: Mugunghwa are Blooming

UPDATE: Here are a few snaps from the Opening Party of this exhibit. Click here!

Living in Daejeon, South Korea since January of 2010 I’ve seen a lot of expansion and growth, spreading the city outwards, slowly blocking the mountains and river views, while simultaneously building upwards. What used to be bare land and field-like conditions, became huge sky rise apartment buildings, artificial parks and additional traffic lights. Our what used to be a seamless commute to work, in just 5-6 years, has turned into a frenzy of honking, impatient drivers on their way to god knows where. That’s big city living for ya…

Yesterday, I learned some pleasant news about this bustling city of ours.  You see, we have this area that used to be called Downtown, which later relocated to Dunsandong, but these days the Old Downtown is revitalizing! Nope, you don’t really see new construction going up around Daejeon Station, instead the city is hoping for non other but — an Urban Renewal. Old one, and two story buildings are being re-purposed into new coffee shops, restaurants, art galleries and more.

Apparently, there’s an art-centered motivation for this part of town, which has been working hard in order to invite/host artists domestic and international in order to showcase their work in various creative forms. That’s where we come in! We’re a mixed group of all types of artists who are exhibiting in Daejeon twice a year and are always on the lookout for an affordable and suitable space. As luck would have it, we got on someone’s radar and our Fall exhibition this year is sponsored by the city (which involves wonderful perks like a free gallery, free marketing, free snacks and refreshments on the opening night – everything we would normally budget for as a group). Hooray!

So, you’re invited to join 12 wonderfully talented DJAC artists as they decipher the theme “Mugunghwa are Blooming (Urban Renewal)” in their own ways through pottery, painting, furniture design, photography, silk screen printing and more. There’s is sure to be something for everyone!

Feel free to RSVP for the event on our Facebook page and don’t forget to check out the individual work of each artist!AC ParsonsAlla PonomarevaChristopher MaslonDa Eun KimHank HaddockJames KnaackJohan FrancisKevin NickolaiPaul FortunadoReggie HartYeri LeeJin Joung

The show opens to the public tomorrow (Wednesday, 10.10.18) and the doors will remain open from 10-5 pm for any interested visitors. With the opening party scheduled for this Saturday, October 13 from 6-9 pm, it is a great opportunity to network and socialize with the artists themselves. The show will close on October 16, leaving you only 6 days to see the exhibit, so don’t delay and put us on your calendar!

Hope to see you there!
